Laminate flooring (sometimes referred to as fake or faux flooring) is multi-layered synthetic floorboards. The layers (or veneers) are bonded together via a high temperature, high pressure lamination process.
Traditionally, laminate is made up of four layers, with a clear melamine wear layer placed over a decorative top layer. The core material is usually made of High Density Fibreboard (HDF), which is water resistant.
Laminate floorboards simulate timber.
Amazing levels of realism are achieved by using a high resolution photo of real wood printed on the decor layer. The decorative photo layer is then covered by a hard wearing, clear melamine protective layer.
The inner core layer is usually made of melamine resin and fibreboard materials made from hardwood pulp.
Laminate flooring originated in Europe in the late 1970s. While the Australian market has experienced significant growth in laminate flooring, manufacturers and suppliers in Australia still defer to European Standard No. EN 13329:2000 specifying laminate floor covering requirements and testing methods.
