Laminate flooring, sometimes referred to as “artificial” or “faux flooring” is a multi-layered synthetic flooring system.
Laminate floors are popular with DIY-ers for their ease of installation and affordable price point. Laminate floorboards are usually sold in a boxed package of tongue and groove planks, which can be clicked into one another.
Installed laminated flooring is generally “floated” over the sub-floor, on top of a foam/film underlayment. The underlay provides a moisture barrier and sound reduction function.
A laminate floorboard or plank is made from layers (or veneers). These are bonded together via a high temperature, high pressure lamination process.
Traditionally, laminate flooring is made up of four layers, with a clear melamine wear layer placed over a decorative top layer. The core material is usually made of High Density Fibreboard (HDF), which is water resistant.
Laminate floors originated in Europe in the mid 20th century. While Australia has experienced significant growth in laminate flooring, the industry in Australia still defers to European Standard No. EN 13329:2000 specifying laminate floor covering requirements and testing methods.
Amazing levels of realism are visually achieved by printing high resolution photography of real hardwood timber on the decorative layer. The decorative photo top layer is then covered by a hard wearing, clear melamine protective layer.
Some premium laminate flooring even has texture added to the decorative layer. This is achieved with the use of wire brushes, ensuring no two planks are the same.
While vacuuming or sweeping is generally all that is needed to maintain a laminate floor, you can also spot clean planks with nail polish remover and it won’t even mark the floor!
